Moving abroad as a couple is very different from moving alone.
For an Indian professional, the best destination isn’t necessarily the country with the cheapest visa. You need to consider your job prospects, salary, spouse rights, cost of living, healthcare, residence pathway and whether your wife can work after moving.
For 2026, these are the countries I would seriously consider for Indian couples.
๐ฉ๐ช 1. Germany โ Best Overall for Skilled Indian Couples
Germany would be my #1 choice for a skilled Indian professional who wants to build a long-term life abroad with their wife.
The biggest advantage is that you can potentially move through a skilled-worker route based on employment rather than needing a huge bank balance.
Germany’s official immigration portal confirms that a skilled worker with a qualifying residence permit can bring their spouse through family reunification. For spouses joining a third-country skilled worker, adequate health insurance and financial resources are required, but no German-language proof is required for the spouse joining a skilled worker in the circumstances described by the official guidance. Once the spouse receives the residence permit, they are entitled to work in Germany without restriction.
That last point is extremely important.
You’re not necessarily moving as:
Husband works โ wife stays dependent.
Instead, your wife can potentially work too.
Best for
Software developers, AI professionals, engineers, data professionals, game developers and other skilled workers.

๐ฆ๐ช 2. UAE โ Excellent for Career + Couple Move
The UAE is one of the most practical destinations for an Indian professional who wants to increase income while remaining relatively close to India.
Once you have a valid UAE residence visa, you can sponsor your spouse and children. The UAE government currently states that an expatriate resident can sponsor their spouse and other eligible family members with a salary of AED 4,000/month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.
The UAE also offers longer-term residence options such as the Green Residence, including categories for skilled workers, freelancers, self-employed people, investors and business partners. Green Residence holders can sponsor family members including spouses and children.
Why couples like it
- Large Indian community
- English widely used
- Close to India
- Strong technology/business market
- Spouse sponsorship available
- No personal income tax under the UAE’s current individual tax system
Best for
IT, AI, cloud, cybersecurity, business, finance and engineering professionals.

๐ช๐ธ 3. Spain โ Excellent for Remote-Working Couples
Spain becomes particularly interesting if you already have a remote job with an overseas company.
Spain’s digital-nomad visa is designed for foreigners living in Spain while working remotely for companies or employers outside Spain. Applicants generally need an appropriate university qualification or at least three years of professional experience in their field.
And importantly for your situation, the official Spanish consular guidance specifically allows:
- Spouse/unmarried partner
- Dependent children
- Certain dependent relatives
to obtain the visa as family members.
The catch
The income requirement is relatively high.
So Spain is excellent for someone who already has a strong remote income, but it isn’t necessarily the best route for someone earning only โน1โ2 lakh/month.
Best for
Remote software developers, designers, consultants and online business owners.

๐ต๐น 4. Portugal โ Good European Option for Remote Workers
Portugal is another destination worth considering when your income comes from remote work or independent professional activity.
Portugal has residence pathways for people working remotely for entities outside Portugal. Its immigration authority requires documents demonstrating the overseas employment/service relationship for the remote-work residence route.
Portugal also has a formal family reunification pathway. The Portuguese government states that close family members of someone holding a Portuguese residence permit can obtain a residence visa for family reunification, subject to the applicable conditions.
Best for
Remote workers and independent professionals who want an EU base.

Main challenge

๐ฒ๐พ 5. Malaysia โ One of the Best Lower-Cost Couple Options
If you want to move abroad but don’t want Western European living costs, Malaysia deserves serious consideration.
Kuala Lumpur offers a relatively affordable combination of:
- Modern infrastructure
- Good internet
- Large expat community
- English-friendly environment
- Easy access to India and Southeast Asia
Malaysia’s DE Rantau program is specifically designed around digital professionals and remote workers.
For an Indian couple, Malaysia can be a useful stepping stone: move abroad, gain international experience, reduce living costs and then consider Europe or another country later.
Best for
IT professionals, remote workers, freelancers and digital entrepreneurs.

๐จ๐ฆ 6. Canada โ Strong Immigration Potential, But Expensive
Canada remains attractive because it has established immigration pathways and a large Indian community.
The biggest downside is cost.
Housing in major cities can be extremely expensive, and the immigration process is competitive.
For a couple, I would not recommend moving to Canada purely because “Canada is easy for Indians.” Your exact immigration program, occupation, CRS profile, language scores, work experience and province matter.
Best for
Professionals who can qualify through a skilled immigration or employer pathway.

๐ฆ๐บ 7. Australia โ Good Long-Term Option for Skilled Professionals
Australia is another strong option for skilled professionals who want a long-term residence pathway.
The big advantage is that Australia has well-established skilled migration and employer-sponsored systems.
The disadvantages are:
- High cost of living
- Competitive skilled migration
- English-language requirements
- Large financial commitment for relocation
For a couple, however, the long-term lifestyle and employment opportunities can make the cost worthwhile if you qualify.
Best for
IT, engineering, healthcare and other skilled occupations.

๐ซ๐ฎ 8. Finland โ Great Lifestyle, Smaller Job Market
Finland is particularly interesting for people working in:
- Software
- AI
- Gaming
- Engineering
- Research
- Technology
It offers excellent public services and a high quality of life.
The downside is that the technology job market is much smaller than Germany’s, and salaries need to be considered against the cost of living.
For someone in game development or advanced technology, however, Finland is worth researching.
Best for
Tech, gaming, AI and engineering professionals.

๐ณ๐ฑ 9. Netherlands โ Excellent for Highly Skilled Workers
The Netherlands is one of Europe’s most attractive destinations for highly skilled technology workers.
It has a strong international job market, extensive English usage and good infrastructure.
The challenge is housing.
Amsterdam and other major cities can be extremely expensive and competitive for accommodation.
For a couple where one partner gets a good employer-sponsored job, however, it can be an excellent destination.
Best for
Software, AI, cloud, engineering and technology.
Couple advantage

Main problem

๐ฏ๐ต 10. Japan โ Amazing Lifestyle, But Different Immigration Strategy
Since you’ve already travelled to Japan, you know what the country is like as a visitor.
Japan can also be a relocation destination, but I would approach it through employment, rather than its digital-nomad route.
For an Indian professional with Japanese employment, Japan has multiple work/residence categories, and spouse-dependent routes can be available depending on the main residence status.
The major challenge is language and the comparatively different workplace culture.
Best for
Technology professionals who genuinely want to live in Japan and are prepared to learn Japanese.

๐ฐ What About Someone Earning โน1.35 Lakh?
This is where the ranking changes.
Suppose you’re currently earning:
โน1.35 lakh/month in India.
I wouldn’t recommend choosing a country based solely on whether your current salary meets its digital-nomad threshold.
I’d prioritize:
Route 1 โ Employer-sponsored relocation
India โ overseas job โ work visa โ wife joins you
This is particularly attractive for:
๐ฉ๐ช Germany
๐ณ๐ฑ Netherlands
๐ฆ๐บ Australia
๐จ๐ฆ Canada
๐ซ๐ฎ Finland
Route 2 โ Remote-work relocation
Indian/foreign remote income โ digital nomad/residence permit โ wife joins
More relevant to:
๐ช๐ธ Spain
๐ต๐น Portugal
๐ฒ๐พ Malaysia
Route 3 โ Career move to a higher salary
India โ UAE job โ spouse sponsorship
Very attractive if your objective is to increase income quickly.
๐ฉโโค๏ธโ๐จ The Most Important Thing: Can Your Wife Work?
Don’t only ask:
“Can I take my wife?”
Ask:
“Can my wife legally work after we move?”
That’s a much more important question.
For example, Germany’s official guidance says that once the spouse joining a skilled worker receives the relevant residence permit, they are immediately entitled to employment without restriction.
That can fundamentally change the economics of moving.
Instead of:
โน1.35L salary โ one income abroad
you potentially have:
Your income + wife’s income โ two-income household
which makes rent, healthcare and daily expenses much easier to manage.
๐ My Ranking for an Indian Couple
Considering career opportunity + spouse rights + long-term potential + finances, I’d rank them:
| Rank | Country | Best route | Couple score |
|---|---|---|---|
| ๐ฅ | ๐ฉ๐ช Germany | Skilled job | 9.5/10 |
| ๐ฅ | ๐ฆ๐ช UAE | Employment | 9/10 |
| ๐ฅ | ๐ช๐ธ Spain | Remote work | 8.5/10 |
| 4 | ๐ณ๐ฑ Netherlands | Highly skilled job | 8.5/10 |
| 5 | ๐ต๐น Portugal | Remote/work | 8/10 |
| 6 | ๐ฆ๐บ Australia | Skilled migration/job | 8/10 |
| 7 | ๐ฒ๐พ Malaysia | Remote/work | 8/10 |
| 8 | ๐จ๐ฆ Canada | Skilled migration | 7.5/10 |
| 9 | ๐ซ๐ฎ Finland | Tech/gaming job | 7.5/10 |
| 10 | ๐ฏ๐ต Japan | Work visa | 7/10 |
๐ฉ๐ช Why Germany Stands Out
For an experienced Indian technology professional, Germany has a particularly attractive structure:
Get qualified job โ move to Germany โ spouse joins โ spouse can work โ eventually pursue permanent residence.
Germany’s official immigration portal explicitly has dedicated family-reunification routes for spouses of third-country skilled workers. A marriage certificate or equivalent legal proof of the relationship is generally required.
Germany also has a dedicated online Consular Services Portal for national-visa applications, including family reunification. The German Embassy in India currently lists family reunion to join a spouse as a national visa category.
โ ๏ธ Don’t Forget the Marriage Certificate
For couples planning relocation, this is one document I would sort out before starting the immigration process.
A tourist trip can sometimes be documented in different ways, but long-term family reunification normally requires formal proof of the relationship.
Germany, for example, explicitly lists a marriage certificate/civil-partnership certificate/registered partnership certificate among the documents generally needed for spouse family-reunification applications.
So if you’re married but haven’t obtained the certificate yet, getting it should be one of your priorities.
The Bottom Line
If you’re an Indian professional earning โน1โ2 lakh per month and want to move abroad with your wife, don’t start with:
“Which country gives the easiest visa?”
Start with:
“Which country has a realistic job or residence route for my profession and lets my wife live and work with me?”
For a skilled technology professional, Germany is my first country to investigate.
For maximizing salary while staying close to India, UAE is extremely interesting.
For established remote workers, Spain and Portugal become attractive.
For a lower-cost Asian relocation, Malaysia deserves serious consideration.
And for a long-term tech career, Germany, Netherlands, Australia and Canada are much more interesting than simply choosing a country with a cheap visa.
